MUSKEGON, Mich. — On Saturday, June 8, 21-year-old Aleksei Makovic went missing while swimming in Lake Michigan at Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon.
Makovik was seen by several witnesses struggling to swim 200 feet off the south break arm of the Muskegon Lake Channel that lets out into Lake Michigan.
The search for Makovic lasted about four days before being called off on Tuesday. Authorities said on Tuesday that while they had not found a body, they did believe the victim was a 21-year-old man from Ann Arbor after speaking to witnesses and recovering property at the scene.
Authorities did not release a name at that time as they were waiting to confirm he had drowned. Now, they've confirmed the man was Makovic.
"We would like to remind all beach-goers to use caution when swimming in Lake Michigan," said Muskegon Police. "Always be mindful of changing weather and surf conditions. Swimming can become especially challenging around structures like the break arms."
