KENT COUNTY, Mich. — After hours of partying at a Kent County event space Sunday night, fighting broke out and escalated to the point of a man firing a shot into the ceiling.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office said just before midnight, many people called 911 to report a shooting at the 4 Mile Showplace.
The initial reports indicated someone was shot among the hundreds of people attending a party.
Responding deputies, Walker Police and troopers found many people leaving the venue.
They didn't find anyone who had been struck by gunfire, but they did find people injured from a fight. Those people reportedly had minor injuries.
Investigators believe that just before 911 was called, several groups of people started fighting.
At some point, deputies believe a man walked inside the building and fired a shot into the ceiling.
A bystander tried to confront him, and that person was pistol-whipped in the face.
Investigators described the man who fired the shot as wearing all black. They said he left in a sedan.
Detectives are still working to learn more about what happened.
If you were inside at the time, you're encouraged to contact the Kent County Sheriff's Office.
