GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A person has been charged in connection to a Grand Rapids Public Schools student who brought a gun to Stocking Elementary School in early May, Grand Rapids Police announced.
The 8-year-old student brought the loaded gun to school on May 10.
The suspect, who lived in a home with the child, was charged with Felony Firearm and Child Abuse in the 4th degree. The suspect's name has not been released.
These are the second charges filed in the case of a child bringing a gun to a Grand Rapids Public School this school year, with four incidences total.
The first charges were when a Cesar E. Chavez Elementary student brought his mother's fiancée's 9mm handgun to school just one week prior to this case.
“These charges are the direct result of GRPD’s efforts to combat gun violence in our community,” said Chief Eric Winstrom.
“This could have had a very tragic outcome if another student and GRPS staff hadn’t acted so quickly. GRPD is committed to holding people accountable, but we can’t do it alone. As a community, we have a responsibility to our children, and to each other, to keep guns out of the hands of kids and to keep illegally possessed guns off our streets.”
