AG Letter details what police should look out for on election day security

Michigan's Attorney General, Dana Nessel, has issued a letter reminding law enforcement officials of their duties to keep Michigan elections safe and secure.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan's Attorney General, Dana Nessel, has issued a letter reminding law enforcement officials of their duties to keep Michigan elections safe and secure.

The entire document is 14 pages of scenarios law enforcement could face during election day and at early voting locations, as well as felonies and misdemeanors for them to keep in mind if they're ever called to one of these locations.

The first page reads in part:

"It is important to note that, under MCL 168.940 and 168.941, county prosecutors and law enforcement agencies have a duty to investigate alleged criminal violations of the Michigan Election Law, and in appropriate cases, pursue appropriate enforcement action."

Attorney General Nessel addressed the media Thursday afternoon about the letter and her offices' efforts for voters to feel confident when voting in person or dropping off their ballots.

"We're not telling our law enforcement partners what they have to do," said the attorney general. "We're doing a few things. One, we're making them aware of just what the law is. We've had so many changes that we think it's important that you sort of have a one-stop shop where you can look for what is like to lead to be any of the laws that might be implicated that local law enforcement or county law enforcement or even the state police might see. But then these are just recommendations."
