Reports: Scammer calling Allegan Co. residents in attempt to get personal information

Allegan County Clerk Bob Genetski said the scammer is calling from the number 866-318-2921.

ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — The Allegan County Clerk is issuing a warning about a scam circulating through the county.

County Clerk Bob Genetski said he has received reports of residents getting calls from a number claiming to be from the clerk's office. The person on the other end, who Genetski said may have an accent or be AI-generated, claims their name is "Chris" and asks residents for personal information in order to deliver "time sensitive documents."

Genetski said the call is not coming from his office.

“Thank you to the alert citizens who messaged me on Facebook on Saturday to ask if this call was from my office, and even sent a copy of the voicemail,” Genetski said. “Most of the communication from my office comes through the U.S. Mail and the customer is anticipating it. We do not have an 800 number, so when you do receive a call from us, it will be from a 269 area code.”

Genetski said the scammer is calling from the number 866-318-2921. The number appears to have been reported multiple times as belonging to a scammer.

If you answer a call impersonating the Allegan County Clerk's Office and requesting personal information, you should hang up. You can report the number to Attorney General Dana Nessel's office here.
