GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After 14 days and over 93,000 votes a winner has been crowned for ArtPrize 2024. Dynamic Sunset, a piece made by Jenison's John Katerberg, took the public vote grand prize.
Dynamic Sunset was on display at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Katerberg will receive $125,000 in earnings for taking first place.
The piece, which includes brass and metal finishing techniques, was inspired by his love for Michigan and places like Grand Haven.
"I would think about places like this. When I was deployed to Afghanistan and Desert Storm, just thinking of someplace beautiful like this would mentally take me away from there. So that's a part, an important part of my story, is that, you know, beautiful places like this exist," said Katerberg.
Also named on Friday night was the $50,000 prize for the Juried Grand Prize. For this award, expert jurors from the fields of art and design selected the piece that they determined was the best in show.
The winner of the Juried Grand Prize was The Trauma Project, a collaborative entry by artists from the Grand Rapids area at 106 Gallery.
