Heading to ArtPrize? How to plan your parking to avoid high costs

Jennifer Kasper suggested using the city's DASH service or walking.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Soon, the streets and sidewalks in downtown Grand Rapids will be filled with artwork.

And people are already excited.

“It's, free, it's a beautiful day. You get to see so many different pieces,” said Grand Rapids resident Julie Hoffer.

Hoffer said she has gone several times and is bringing friends this year. She said it's an opportunity to learn more about others around you.

"It brings people out downtown. You get to see more of our city and experience different cultures. It's been, it's been a blessing for Grand Rapids,” said Hoffer.

"It's always exciting to see things like this that encourage individuals who are trying to create, you know, creatively send put themselves out there. You know, that's their soul on the table, not just a piece of art," said Hoffer’s friend, Pat Connor

One of the artists you could see is John Katerberg.

He's the artist behind the piece “Dynamic Sunset." The piece is on display at the Gerald R. Ford Museum.

The work of art, which includes brass and metal finishing techniques, was inspired by his love for Michigan and places like Grand Haven.

"I would think about places like this. When I was deployed to Afghanistan and Desert Storm, just thinking of someplace beautiful like this would mentally take me away from there. So that's a part, an important part of my story, is that, you know, beautiful places like this exist, "said Katerberg.

And if that's inspired you to see his or other artists work starting Friday, Jennifer Kasper with Mobile GR said it’s a good idea to start making your transportation plan now.

“Make a plan as to where you want to park, and then utilize the other methods of transportation that we have, such as the dash our E bike and scooter share or walking the weather's going to be nice,” said Kasper.

Kasper said the city has options for cheaper parking, like on the west side near the YMCA you can find a $3 parking ramp.

Or, people can park at a few park and ride locations near the north Monroe and Leonard areas. There, you can drop off your car and ride the DASH.

But new this year, the city has increased its parking enforcement in certain areas until 7:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Meaning, you will want to look for any signage you see when you park and have the MOTU app already downloaded so you can pay for parking.
