IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — A 30-year-old Grand Rapids man who was kayaking with his girlfriend in an Ionia County lake Sunday evening is still missing Monday afternoon.

The search on Sessions Lake has now turned into a recovery effort, the Ionia County Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office said just before 7 p.m. Sunday, someone called 911 to report a kayaker had flipped his vessel and didn't resurface.

Water rescue teams from several area fire departments as well as the sheriff's dive team responded to the no-wake lake inside the Ionia State Recreation Area.

Deputies said the missing kayaker was on the water his his girlfriend when they got uncomfortable in their lifejackets, so they took them off.

At some point, the man flipped and didn't resurface. The last time he was seen was 6:57 p.m.

Authorities said they're not sharing the name of the man due to ongoing recovery efforts and privacy for his family who may not have yet been notified.
