'AVIATION EMERGENCY' | No injuries following early morning emergency landing in Ionia County

The Cessna that made an emergency landing near Ionia County Airport early Saturday morning.

IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — A small Cessna airplane had to make an emergency landing in Ionia County early Saturday morning, the sheriff's department said.

The pilot, who wasn't injured in the incident, was flying from Cleveland, Ohio to Greenville, Michigan when he contacted the Chicago Center and said he was running low on fuel.

The pilot said told Chicago Center he could not find Ionia Airport before losing contact.

First responders to the Ionia Airport could not locate the plane when they arrived.

Deputies from the Ionia County Sheriff's Office were able to determine the plane's last known location with a flight tracker app and began searching near East David Highway and 40 Acre Town Road.

A short time later, deputies found the plane and the pilot in a field. Deputies said that both the pilot and the plane were unharmed.

The sheriff's office reported the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration and the plane was towed from the field by I-96 Towing.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Berlin-Orange Townships Fire Department and Life EMS Ambulance as well.

The identity of the pilot was not released.
