CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. — A man is in custody after a high-speed chase with police on Saturday night that spanned two counties, according to the Battle Creek Police Department.
BCPD said around 8:40 p.m. Calhoun County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of gunfire on Maxwell Drive in Pennfield Township.
Police said although there were no injuries reported, witnesses said they saw a silver Chevrolet Silverado speed away from the area.
At 9 p.m., BCPD said dispatch received a second call that reported a Silverado driving recklessly near Columbia and Capital Avenues.
A Battle Creek police officer said they saw the suspect do a doughnut in the intersection before speeding off again.
At 9:25 p.m., dispatch received a call from a driver who reported being chased by a Silverado in a parking lot in the 1500 block of W. Michigan Avenue. Police said another witness reported seeing a Silverado aggressively pursue a For Mustang in the same area.
A Battle Creek police officer who had been doing a traffic stop nearby tried to stop the Silverado after the Mustang driver asked them for help.
BCPD said the Silverado sped off going north on M-37 into Hastings, then turned east and then north onto M-43 before heading south back through Hastings toward Delton.
Police said the chase ended in Delton when the suspect drove over stop sticks used by a Barry Township officer.
BCPD said the chase lasted for 45 minutes and covered more than 50 miles, reaching speeds of up to 90 mph.
The 46-year-old Battle Creek man was taken into custody and is being held at the Calhoun County Jail.
Police said he's being held on charges of fleeing and eluding, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, multiple weapons offenses and a probation violation warrant related to several reckless driving reports.
Six law enforcement agencies helped in the chase, including BCPD, Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, Barry County Sheriff's Office, Barry Township Police Department, Hastings Police Department and the Michigan State Police.
