BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A house fire in Battle Creek that damaged a laundry room was started by a rodent in the walls chewing through electrical wires.

The fire started at a home in the 12000 block of Sonoma Road around 4 p.m. Monday. The homeowner noticed the fire, called for help and safely left the home.

It was found that a rodent had gotten inside the home's walls to store walnuts. It chewed through the AC electrical feed, which caused a spark and ignited a small fire.

Responding firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire. About $25,000 in damage was estimated by authorities, though the damage was mostly contained to the laundry room of the home.

No one was injured.
