Police investigating shooting that hurt Battle Creek officer, left suspect dead

An officer got into a physical altercation with the suspect and was shot in the leg. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek said a 29-year-old Texas man is dead after a shooting downtown involving Battle Creek Police officers.

Police responded to a report of an unwanted person at Café Rica, located at 62 E Michigan Avenue, around 3:42 p.m.

An officer got into a physical altercation with the suspect and was shot in the leg. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

Another officer intervened, shooting the suspect and stopping the altercation. The suspect received medical treatment on scene but was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Michigan State Police and the Battle Creek Crime Lab will be investigating the shooting. Officials said the officer who shot the suspect will be placed on administrative leave as that is their standard procedure.

Michigan State Police posted to X saying there is no longer a threat to the area, however the City of Battle Creek asked people to avoid the area between Division Street and Capital Avenue as they investigate.
