BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- A Springfield father is being held in jail after he was charged Wednesday with abusing his infant daughter.

Brady West, 23, sometimes cried as he was being arraigned on a charge of second-degree child abuse.

"This child suffered a broken leg, multiple broken ribs, facial bruising and eyelid petechiae (bleeding)," said Assistant Calhoun County Prosecutor Karen Kelley, who argued for a high cash bond. "This is a serious crime. This child was seriously injured."

West was arrested March 29 after the child, who is three months old on April 5, was taken to the hospital by her mother for treatment of injuries including bruising to the head and neck.

Calhoun County Sheriff Department investigators said some of the injuries were new and some older. The child has been treated and released from the hospital, deputies said Tuesday.

Deputies said West was caring for his daughter while the child's mother was working.

Magistrate Joe Brutsche increased West's interim bond set after his arrest from $25,000 to $50,000 cash. A preliminary examination is scheduled for April 18 before Judge Samuel Durham.

West also is awaiting a preliminary examination set for April 19 on a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child aged 13 to 15. That case was investigated by the Battle Creek Police Department. He is being held on $10,000 cash bond in that case.
