Biker hit, killed after car crosses center line in Georgetown Twp.

While driving in a curved portion of Fillmore Street, a woman crossed the center line and hit a bicyclist. He later died from his injuries.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — A man was killed in a crash in Ottawa County, the Sheriff's Office said.

It all happened around 8:41 a.m. Wednesday, June 19. Deputies said that's when they were called to the area of Fillmore Street near 28th Avenue in Georgetown Township. 

The investigation shows a 39-year-old woman from Allendale was driving a Chevy eastbound on Fillmore. In the curved portion of Fillmore, the woman crossed the center line and hit a 59-year-old Grandville man riding a bike on the westbound shoulder.

The man, identified as Douglas Sjoerdsma, was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital with critical injuries. Deputies said he was wearing a helmet. 

He later died from his injuries.

The woman was also sent to the hospital with minor injuries. 

Fillmore Street was closed while deputies cleaned up and investigated, but it has since reopened. 

The investigation is ongoing.
