GRAAMA offers programs, exhibits to kick off Black History Month

Monday, Feb. 1 marks beginning of Black History Month

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Monday, Feb. 1 marks the beginning of Black History Month, and the Grand Rapids African-American Museum & Archives (GRAAMA) is offering plenty of resources to educate, inform, uplift, and entertain.

Kamarah Bayard says exhibits include The Art of Protest, chronicling racial justice uprisings past and present. Also opening this month is the exhibit "Black Family Matters" by artist Lester White.

The museum has displays about Mayor Lyman Parks, Black Inventors, and Cooking with Soul and artifacts from real Grand Rapids people and families.

The museum has also activated its ZOOM class, Basic Black 101, every Saturday 10 a.m. with topics like Collecting Black History, Music of Protest, and Tracing Your Roots.

Bayard says families can also schedule a time to come in and record their stories, which will be stored in the museum's collection.

GRAAMA is located at 87 Monroe Center in downtown Grand Rapids.
