Grand Rapids Public Museum Black History Month events to check out this February

Honoring the past, present and future, Innovators: Celebrating Black History is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3 at the GRPM.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — You're invited to visit the Grand Rapids Public Museum in February to check out exhibits showcasing Black innovators in our community. 

Innovators: Celebrating Black History, an event that showcases Black-led initiatives with impacts at a local, national and global scale is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3 at GRPM. 

“We are excited to showcase Black innovators in this way, as we celebrate Black History Month,” said Mari Beth Jelks, Vice President of Human Resources at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, “Along with community partners, we honor these inspiring individuals and are proud to share their stories.”

The museum's STEAM month will have events all through February where community partners will share information, prototypes, products, creations, ideas and more with visitors. 

Partners include Legacy & Love/Black Voices @ the River, Black Book Exchange Box, Barb’s Bangles, Casual Simulation, STEM Greenhouse, Grand Rapids Black Nurses Association, and The Midwest Tech Project.

Last year, the museum shared some discovered magic lantern slides that feature 69 photographs of The Tuskegee Institute, now referred to as Tuskegee University. The Museum will showcase these rare slides along with period photography equipment during February in the Streets of Old Grand Rapids, inside the central window of the Voigt Herpolsheimer Co. section of the exhibit.

The Museum is partnering with Warner Norcross + Judd LLP and Grand Rapids Public Schools to showcase entries from their 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Legacy Contest. Open to all sixth-grade GRPS scholars, entries from various GRPS schools will be displayed on the first floor near the A is for Autos exhibit. 

The program is free with GRPM admission. Admission tickets are available at tickets.grpm.org
