BYRON CENTER, Mich. — Saturday, October 14, you can enjoy a scenic walk around Meijer Gardens for the annual Parkinson Hero Walk put on by the Michigan Parkinson Foundation.
Registration begins at 9 Saturday morning.
Michigan Parkinson Foundation CEO Kristin Rossi told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that there are already around 500 people registered for this year’s walk, more than ever before. The organization has also raised nearly $70,000, breaking another record.
One regular participant in the walk, Amy Hooyer, was diagnosed with Parkison’s 11 years ago at the age of 45. She says movement is key after a Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Rock Steady Boxing is a gym with locations all over the world. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease through non-contact boxing.
Hooyer opened the first Rock Steady Boxing location in Michigan. She gave the 13 ON YOUR MORNING team a look at some of the exercises benefiting those living with Parkinson’s at her Byron Center gym.
The Michigan Parkinson Foundation offers free, virtual exercise classes six days a week. You can find more information on those classes on their website here.
