MONTCALM COUNTY, Mich. — A 14-year-old boy was killed Monday afternoon when an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) landed on him during a crash.
The crash happened on private property in Reynolds Township around 1:15 p.m. The 14-year-old Howard City boy had been driving a Polaris Ranger when he hit a pile of roofing trusses, according to investigators. The boy was ejected from the vehicle, and the ATV landed on him.
A family member later found him and called 911. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies say the boy was not wearing a seatbelt or helmet at the time of the crash.
The boy was an eighth grade student with Tri County Area Schools. A letter sent to parents from Superintendent Ryan Biller was obtained by 13 ON YOUR SIDE. The letter reads, in part:
"This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns and questions for our entire school community, especially our students.
We are available to address the many emotions, concerns and questions for our entire school, especially our students. Our district has a School Crisis Team in place made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents/guardians, and school staff at difficult times such as this."
Biller goes on to encourage anyone struggling with this incident to speak with the school's crisis team.
