New developments coming to Brann's Steakhouse in Grand Rapids

While still in the planning process, the Brann family said the new building may be four to five stories tall, including retail, a concept restaurant and apartments.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After 50 years of food and fun, Johnny Brann's Steakhouse & Grille on Leonard Street in Grand Rapids is suspending operations to make way for construction on a new project.

In 2020, Johnny Brann Sr., his wife Sandy and their son Johnny Brann Jr. began a new development plan for Grand Rapids' Westside. The plan included moving Brann Jr.'s business, Interphase Interiors, to the area.

The Brann family is now unveiling a second development phase in the plan.

"The legacy my parents have cultivated is not just about restaurants; it's about a shared commitment to our community," said Brann Jr. "As we move into this new phase, I am honored to work with my Dad to continue the Brann's tradition. Our dedication to the Westside's growth remains unwavering, and we look forward to contributing to its vibrant future."

Part of phase two of the plan includes temporarily closing Brann's Steakhouse & Grille on Leonard beginning Friday, June 7 at 10 p.m. so construction can begin on the new project.

While still in the planning process for the new development, the Brann family said the building may be four to five stories tall, including retail, a concept restaurant and 60-102 residential units.

The project is expected to cost between $25 million to $45 million and a more detailed construction plan will be revealed in the coming months.

Brann Sr. will remain as the owner of the building and any new developments.

"As a restaurant owner, my goal has always been to evolve with the trends and meet our customers' ever-changing tastes,” said Brann Sr. “What lies ahead is an opportunity to not just preserve, but to continue building upon our family legacy, ensuring that the Westside of Grand Rapids remains a place where our community can come together and create lasting memories."

Brann Sr.'s father, John M. Brann, opened the original Stag Bar and Porterhouse Room at the corner of Division and Fulton, followed by the very first Brann's Steakhouse & Grille in Burton Heights on Division in 1960.

Since Brann Sr. and his brother Mike opened the doors to Brann's Steakhouse & Grille on Leonard in 1974, the site has seen multiple renovations, expansions and enhancements.

The biggest enhancement to the location was a grand renovation in 2021, showcasing a tribute to fallen soldiers and police officers. The law enforcement and military memorabilia and exterior flags will be moved to the Brann's Grandville location when construction begins.

All employees at Brann's Steakhouse & Grille on Leonard will receive a special compensation package and an opportunity to continue working at other restaurant locations.

Any gift cards will be honored at any Brann's Steakhouse & Grille locations.
