Bras for a Cause event raising money to support those fighting cancer

Guests can enjoy appetizers, cocktails and a raffle before the silent auction, where men from the community strut their stuff in custom bras—all for a good cause.

SPRING LAKE, Mich. — Bras for a Cause is back on the lakeshore this Friday! The event has been raising money to support those fighting cancer for decades.

For those who haven't been, Bras with a Cause promises an eventful evening! Guests can enjoy appetizers, cocktails and a raffle before the silent auction, where men from the community strut their stuff wearing custom bras. This year's silent auction includes things like trips, jewelry, tailgate items and more.

"What we do is raise funds in a fun way for cancer," said organizer Stacey Ruwe. "So we have a live auction that happens, and these lovely gentlemen help us get the bids up there by strutting their stuff on the runway, working the crowd, getting people pretty excited about what's happening."

The bras worn by the men are custom-made ahead of the event. Many of them feature things like feathers, fringe, polka dots and other unique designs. One of the bras Ruwe showed off is covered in corks from wine bottles.

"We do a lot of the bras ourselves, we have many people who will get together," Ruwe said. "So we just have a huge supply of them and keep making new ones. People volunteer every year to make more, too."

Proceeds will go to Bluebird Cancer Retreats, which offers support to those battling cancer as well as their families and caregivers. They offer support groups, retreats, counseling and more.

Bras with a Cause kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Trillium Events in Spring Lake. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online here.

13 ON YOUR SIDE's Dave Kaechele will be emceeing the event.
