2 Grand Rapids Public Schools fields getting major upgrades thanks to voters

Voters approved the bond in November of 2023, which will help fund projects in the district.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Some major changes are coming to West Michigan athletic fields.

Grand Rapids Public Schools plans to make upgrades at Houseman Field and Briggs Field.

The project is made possible because of the Reimagine GRPS Bond.

Voters approved the bond back in November of 2023, which will help fund projects in the district.

People can expect upgrades at Houseman Field like a new track, new turf, new LED lighting, expanded parking, and upgrades to locker rooms. Meanwhile at Briggs Field, people can expect to see a new track, field reseeding, bleacher upgrades, additional bathrooms, and fencing.

Alex Smart, Executive Director of Facilities and Operations said making these changes is all about having facilities that are up to date, safe and make athletes feel proud.

On Wednesday GRPS will be holding an informational meeting at 6 p.m. at GRPS University, where you can get more information on the project timeline and see renderings.

The budget to renovate Houseman Field is $6 million and the budget to renovate Briggs Fields is $1.5 million.
