GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man is in custody after Grand Rapids police said he hit a business owner over the head with a beer bottle while trying to steal alcohol on Friday night in Grand Rapids.

GRPD said the incident happened around 9 p.m. in the 600 block of Bridge on the city's west side.

Officers said the man tried to steal beer from the business when the owner came out from the back and confronted him. The two got into a fight and the suspect hit the owner in the head with the beer bottle and ran.

GRPD said the owner followed the suspect, tracking him as police responded.

Officers were able to catch up to the suspect and arrest him.

GRPD said the suspect told police the owner had hit him with a golf club. The owner denied this and said the man had the injury before the fight.

According to GRPD, the suspect was checked out at a local hospital and would then be taken to jail. The owner was fine and wasn't treated at the scene.
