CALEDONIA, Mich. — As Caledonia Community Schools welcomes students back to classes, they have some upgrades to their security system to share.

This year, school leaders focused on the physical security measures and preparedness of all their buildings.

These upgrades include a revised incident response protocol. Along with numerous other districts across the state, Caledonia adopted a new procedure for emergencies as recommended by the Michigan State Police.

They built a high school connector, which is a passage between their north and south high school buildings. Administration says it enhances both safety and convenience for students and staff.

Last spring, building entrances were also reinforced by enhanced transactional windows, making them stronger.

If you plan to visit the high school, you'll encounter a new visitor system as well. Check-in stations were installed at all their schools, which prints visitor badges with names, photos, dates and destinations within the building.

It also performs a check against registered sex offenders and any alerts from custom databases set up by the school. This could include information like custody orders, expelled students or dismissed school or district employees.

Students and staff can expect new faces in district buildings. The Board of Education approved more positions to their security team.

At their last board meeting, they added a high school security/safety monitor and a district security coordinator in addition to existing school resource and safety officers. They also increased intermediate school safety monitor hours at Kraft Meadows.
