CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. — The Calhoun County Public Health Department is investigating after several nonfatal overdoses occurred in Battle Creek early Thursday.
Officials say there were several overdoses at the same scene. At this time, it is believed opioid use was involved.
County health officials are now working to prevent potential overdoses.
“Harm reduction precautions such as not using drugs when alone, administering naloxone when a suspected overdose is occurring, and calling 911 are important efforts at this time,” said Calhoun County Medical Director Dr. William Nettleton.
Officials are urging Michiganders to take these precautions:
- Keep naloxone readily available on you and at home. Naloxone can help reverse an opioid overdose and can be obtained at no cost from a dispensing box located at the bus and train station in downtown Battle Creek at 119 McCamly Street 8 a.m.-10:30 p.m. and the SHARE Center. Naloxone is also available over-the-counter at local pharmacies and through Calhoun County Public Health Department at 269-969-6370 during normal business hours.
- Never use drugs alone. Make sure a designated person who has not taken drugs is available to administer naloxone or call for emergency assistance.
Anyone struggling with substance use is encouraged to contact Southwest Michigan Behavioral Health at 800-781-0353.
