SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — Damage control continues at the White House following last week's shaky debate performance. More than 20 Democratic governors met with President Joe Biden behind closed doors Wednesday night, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
On Thursday, the Biden campaign is sending one of those high-profile governors here to West Michigan. California Gov. Gavin Newsom will be in West Michigan.
The visit wasn't announced until late Wednesday afternoon.
Newsom, along with Whitmer, has been touted as a possible presidential candidate, but Newsom said after that meeting with the president yesterday, "He's all in. And so am I."
This comes on the heels of First Lady Jill Biden's visit to West Michigan. She spoke Wednesday in Middleville at a summer camp for children of military service members.
While Biden did not answer any questions about her husband’s debate performance, Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow did.
Stabenow said to reporters that President Biden is someone who has taken action and she supports him.
"I think that we shouldn't evaluate anything based on one debate. This is not about 90 minutes; it's about four years and I can tell you, we have more manufacturing jobs than we've ever had. We have more people with lower health care costs. This president took on the drug companies we've been talking about forever. He did it,” Stabenow said.
Meanwhile, Gov. Whitmer, who also attended that meeting in Washington D.C., reiterated in a tweet afterward, "Joe Biden is our nominee. He is in it to win it and I support him."
Newsom will be in South Haven Thursday afternoon. He's listed as a guest for the Van Buren County Democratic Party's Fourth of July event.
