GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It's difficult to watch someone destroy your property. Jessica Ann Tyson, owner of the Candied Yam, knows that feeling.
"Five windows and two doors were shattered with glass everywhere," said Tyson.
The Division Avenue location of the Candied Yam opened their doors only three months ago.
"It was really hurtful to have this type of activity, because we've come in to the community around the community, and we actually made an investment into the community, and myself and my partners, because we know how important this 49507 zip code is," said Tyson.
Tyson says it happened just before midnight on Saturday. A neighbor called police after seeing the vandalism take place. He was caught 30 minutes after that 911 call.
On the inside of the restaurant, Tyson said they found cinder blocks on the floor with glass scattered around them.
After talking with police, Tyson says she doesn't know the man, nor has she heard of any motive.
"The neighbors across the way, they are just amazing, and they saw some activity happening that they were not familiar with, and decided to call the police," said Tyson.
Tyson says she and her staff have been greeted by customers and other business owners all day.
Nick Pilczuk came in with his family Saturday, a long with his grandmother Marge from Marge's Donut Den. They dropped off donuts later in the afternoon to help lift some spirits.
"I'm so happy to see that there's more people coming in here today, and I know they were really excited to open back up for the day. So I think it's really important to have more people come and support the business," said Pilczuk.
"Everybody is in high spirits," said Tyson. "I think what makes us smile is the fact that the customers and our family and our friends are so affirmative and so supportive, and that just makes us keep, keep wanting to go on and on."
