KENT COUNTY, Mich. — After a disappointing 2023-24 season, Cannonsburg Ski Area is excited for low temperatures and lots of snow this early.
The snow-making machines are already cranking out the fluffy white stuff at Cannonsburg this year. It took until January of 2024 to get temperatures low enough last time.
"They've been going 24/7 since Thanksgiving. If temperatures rise, we do have to shut them down. But looking at the forecast, you know, we're really optimistic about an early opening this season," said Danielle Musto, marketing director at Cannonsburg.
If temperatures get too high, near the freezing point, the snow making machines need to shut down until temperatures drop back into the 20s again.
Last year was one of the shortest seasons that Cannonsburg was open, Musto told 13 ON YOUR SIDE.
"Last year we had grass, you know, all throughout most of December and January. So we're extremely ecstatic about the colder temperatures," said Musto.
The lake-effect snow, combined with low temperatures recently, is making it a real possibility that the ski resort opens early this year.
