KENTWOOD, Mich. — At least one car was hit with bullets Tuesday afternoon near East Kentwood High School, the Kent County Sheriff's Office said.
Just before 2:30 p.m., police received multiple calls about shots fired in the area. Deputies arrived and found bullet casings.
Police say two cars exchanged gunfire near the intersection of 60th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue. No one was injured.
The two vehicles involved were a white Jeep Cherokee and a red Kia SUV, deputies say. The Kia and its owners have been located, but the Jeep has yet to be found.
Kentwood Public Schools' superintendent said the ordeal is not related to the district, but East Kentwood High School, the Freshman Campus, and Pinewood Middle School all took safety precautions right before dismissal.
The East Kentwood High School and Pinewood Middle School went on lockdown for about 5 minutes close to the end of the school day. After school officials learned more about the incident, the school translated to secure mode.
On a regular school day, the high school lets out at 2:31 p.m.
East Kentwood Public Schools shared a letter sent home to families about the drive-by that happened about a half mile away from the school complex.
"As more information regarding the incident became available, we transitioned into secure mode, which means we were able to allow our students and staff to continue with their activities while remaining safely inside our building. Because the situation in the neighborhood was taking place at dismissal time for the high school, we delayed dismissal in order to keep all students and staff in the building until advised by law enforcement that all was safe. Once that happened, we resumed daily activities, which included school dismissal," Superintendent Kevin Polston said in the letter.
"At no time was there a direct threat to our buildings or our campus. Our priority is always the safety of our students, and so working together with law enforcement, we took steps to make sure that everyone remained secure inside buildings on the East Kentwood campus."
Anyone with information or doorbell cameras in the neighborhood are asked to call investigators at 616-632-6125 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
