Carmelite monastery in Parnell celebrates 100 years

The Carmelite nuns who live there are cloistered, meaning they are separated from the rest of the world and have dedicated their lives to prayer.

West Michigan's Carmelite monastery is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Bishiop David Walkowiak celebrated jubilee Mass Tuesday morning.

The monastery is in Parnell, east of Cannonsburg. The Carmelite nuns who live there are cloistered, meaning they are separated from the rest of the world and have dedicated their lives to prayer.

"The confidence and consolation it gives us to know there are people who are pursuing the love of the Lord alone, and this is the focus of their lives, it gives us a model and an inspiration to do as much as we can in the same direction," said Bishop Walkowiak.

The monastery was founded in 1916 by 16 refugees from Mexico. The first bishop of Grand Rapids welcomed them to the city.
