CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. — The boil water advisory has been lifted in Cedar Springs, the city announced on Friday afternoon.

The advisory had been in effect since Tuesday night when an alarm system malfunction happened, causing a drop in pressure that could have allowed bacteria to enter the water system.

Some businesses closed, and Cedar Springs Public Schools canceled classes on Wednesday and Thursday. Classes resumed on Friday.

When a boil water advisory is in effect, it can't be lifted until two consecutive water samples test negative for bacteria.

The first round of testing came back negative for bacteria on Thursday and the second round came back negative on Friday.

Now that the advisory is lifted, the city recommended some optional safety tips to heed before using your water like normal:

  • Flush Your Plumbing System:
    • Run all cold water taps in your home for at least 5 minutes.
    • Start with outdoor faucets and then move to indoor sinks, showers and tubs.
  • Flush Appliances and Equipment:
    • Refrigerators and Ice Makers: Discard any ice made during the advisory, and flush the ice maker by making and discarding three additional batches of ice.
    • Hot Water Systems: If you use a hot water heater, flush hot water taps for several minutes as well.
  • Replace Water Filters:
    • Replace filters in refrigerators, faucets, pitchers, or any other appliances.
  • Check and Clean Specialized Equipment:
    • Equipment such as humidifiers, CPAP machines, or medical devices that use water should be cleaned and sanitized as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
