Kent Co. couple arrested after 7-year-old son found locked inside 'small makeshift room' for long periods

​Deputies say the boy was taken to a hospital for an evaluation due to his condition and the state of the home. He has since been placed with care outside the home.

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. — A Cedar Springs couple is facing charges for allegedly abusing their 7-year-old son.

Deputies were called to the couple's home on S Main Street NE on Feb. 22 to check on the couple's young son. Investigators found the 7-year-old boy was locked inside a "small makeshift room" for long periods of time. 

Michael Rus, 47, and Jessica Kilgore, 28, are both charged with unlawful imprisonment and child abuse 2nd degree. Unlawful imprisonment is punishable by a maximum of 15 years and/or $20,000 while child abuse is punishable by a maximum of 10 years. 

Deputies say the boy was taken to a hospital for an evaluation due to his condition and the state of the home.

He has been placed with care outside the home.

The boy's father, a 47-year-old man, and the father's girlfriend, a 38-year-old woman, were taken into custody.

The couple is expected to be arraigned in the 63rd District Court.
