Century Square to bring more urban living to Aggieland

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - As the summer sun beats down, crews continue to work along University Drive as Century Square takes place.

"Under the leadership of Chancellor John Sharp, this is really his vision in redeveloping the married student housing, very low density residential, converting it into a higher density mixed use," said Natalie Ruiz, the director of economic development for College Station.

It's no secret that high density development has been on the upswing near Northgate. The city opted to allow higher density zoning to move in over the past few years. But Century Square takes it to a whole new level.

According to Midway, the company behind the project, Century Square will include 250 apartment units, a fitness center, a poll and two hotels. The project is marketed toward working professionals.

But mixed use development, especially of this density, requires careful strategy to be successful.

"It's tough, you really have to know what you're doing," said Ruiz. " I think we have a great opportunity with Century Square."

The project is expected to wrap up this fall and will include restaurants like Zoes Kitchen, Mo's Irish Pub and a Berryhill Baja Grill.
