César E. Chávez Avenue officially reopens after $7.5 million roadway improvement project

After seven months of work, the Grand Rapids road is open between Clyde Park Avenue and Hall Street.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — César E. Chávez Avenue SW has reopened in Grand Rapids after the completion of a $7.5 million roadway improvement project.

After seven months of work, the road is officially open between Clyde Park Avenue and Hall Street.

City, neighborhood and business leaders gathered on Thursday morning to commemorate the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The project included the installation of a storm sewer system, new water mains, new sidewalks and the replacement of lead water pipes at 29 private properties.

Also included in the project were new driveway approaches, on-street parking, curb extensions at intersections and new fiber-glass streetlights.

There are five new rain gardens and 80 new street trees were planted.

DTE Energy and AT&T made upgrades and replacements to their facilities in conjunction with the project.

Local businesses along the street celebrated the opening with different specials and discounts on Thursday.

"The redevelopment of César E. Chávez Avenue is a significant milestone for our city," said City Manager Mark Washington. "This project not only enhances the safety and functionality of the road but also demonstrates our commitment to creating vibrant and sustainable neighborhoods and business districts."

Additional finish work along the stretch will continue over the next two weeks, which could cause lane closures or shifts.

Officials said motorists and pedestrians should be more cautious on the road as they familiarize themselves with the new features and changes.
