Grand Rapids cafe making themed treats for weekly releases of 'The Great British Baking Show'

Chartreuse Sisters decided to celebrate each Friday's release of a new episode of "The Great British Baking Show" with a themed treat.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — "The Great British Baking Show" is back and a Grand Rapids cafe is celebrating in a special way.

Chartreuse Sisters is a patisserie on Wealthy Street run by sisters Mallory Caillaud-Jones and Alyson Caillaud-Jones.

The sisters have operated the cafe together for more than a year and a half, with Mallory specializing in pastries and Alyson specializing in beverages.

"We are a bakery cafe, and it's just the two of us," Alyson said. "And so we make things that are nostalgic to us, that are exciting and fun."

To capitalize on that, the sisters decided to commemorate each Friday's release of a new episode of "The Great British Baking Show" with a themed treat.

The show, found on Netflix, is a British TV baking competition that showcases a group of amateur bakers competing in a challenge to be named Britain's best amateur baker.

Each weekly episode has a theme, usually centered around the type of food the competitors are baking, like cookies, cakes, pastries, etc.

To coincide with the show, Chartreuse Sisters will have a new treat each week that's based on the episode's theme.

"This week, it's going to be biscuit week," Mallory said. "So we're making our cinnamon roll cookies in the shop so that you can come get whatever the goodie is, watch the show that night and enjoy the goodie while you're watching."

For Mallory and Alyson, the weekly treat helps satisfy a sweet tooth as well as some childhood nostalgia.

"I always watched the Great British Baking Show growing up, it was always just a really fun, exciting, nostalgic thing for me," Mallory said. "It's actually what got me into baking a little bit more, and down the line, then we opened a bakery. So we've always wanted to do something in collaboration with the show, and this is the first year we've actually been able to do that."

"And every time I'm watching the show, I want a treat," Alyson said. "So we want to have that available for people to have at home, to have a treat with the show."

The sisters are only able to make so many themed treats each week, so they suggest coming in early on Friday to purchase the special baked goods.

If you miss out on a themed treat, don't fret. Alyson said they're planning something special for the season finale.

"At the end of the Great British Baking Show, we are planning to do a pre-order for a special box that will have kind of the best of the customer favorites that we did during the course of it, or maybe some that are our favorites or that we're inspired by," she said.

The sisters said those interested can stay up-to-date on information about the pre-orders through the cafe's social media pages and mailing list.

The cafe is only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
