Drop off your Christmas tree to be recycled at these free sites

You have until the end of the month to get it to one of these four locations to have your tree recycled for free.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It's officially 2024, which means it's time to think about getting rid of the Christmas tree drying out in your living room.

Grand Rapids residents have two options for getting rid of live-cut trees. You can drop off your tree for free at four disposal sites or have it picked up at your curb for a fee.

Either way, the trees will be recycled through chipping and composting.

Through Jan. 31, you can drop off your tree at the following locations for free:

  • Riverside Park (north entrance), 2001 Monroe Ave. NE
  • MacKay-Jaycees Park, 2531 Kalamazoo Ave. SE
  • Lincoln Park (Garfield Ave. NW entrance), 231 Marion Ave. NW
  • Huff Park (Ball St. parking lot), 2286 Ball Ave. NE

For an option that's open year-round, you can visit the City's Compost and Yard Waste Site at 2001 Butterworth Road SW. In the winter, they're open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

To have your tree picked up from your home, Grand Rapids Public Works will collect trees curbside through Jan. 31. After this date, you'll need to call and request a collection.

This option requires residents to attach a city bulk yard waste tag (purple tag) to the Christmas tree and have it placed in the pickup area by 7 a.m. on garbage day. One of these tags can be purchased at City Hall in the customer service lobby or at certain local retailers.

The tag must be visible at time of collection. All decorations must be removed from the tree. Pickup may be delayed if there's heavy snow.
