ALLEGAN, Mich. — Residents and businesses in the area of Bond Street in the City of Allegan are under a boil water advisory after a water main break Tuesday. The break occurred on Bond Street between Herkimer and 5th Streets.
The city said in a Facebook post that due to the nature of the repair, they had to turn off water to the area. Turning the water off may have allowed bacterial contamination to occur.
The boil water advisory is for the area of Bond Street between 6th and Marshall streets, Herkimer Street between 6th and Bond streets, and 5th Street between Bond and Herkimer streets.
If you live in that area, you should only drink bottled water or drink water that has been boiled for at least one minute. That means heating the water up to a boil and allowing it to boil for one full minute before allowing it to cool for use. Only boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that could potentially be in the water.
If you live within the affected area you should only use boiled and bottled water until the city advises residents that the system has been flushed and the water has passed tests and is safe. At the earliest, as long as testing comes back negative for bacteria, the city estimated the advisory will be lifted Thursday.
