Kalamazoo community reacts after toddler found dead in car

The child died from suspected heat exhaustion, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said.

VICKSBURG, Mich —

Community members are shocked after a 3-year-old boy was found dead in a car in a Vicksburg Family Fare parking lot Tuesday.

Max Mayer, who is a bookseller at Gilbert and Ivy, said he wasn’t working on Tuesday, and he couldn’t believe the news when he saw it online.

“I go to that grocery store all the time on my lunch break, and to know that a huge emergency was taking place over there, my jaw dropped to the ground,” Mayer said.

Investigators were called to the Family Fare for a suspicious death investigation. The child was dead when authorities arrived. Wednesday morning, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to 13 ON YOUR SIDE that the boy had died in Brady Township and was then driven to the supermarket.

Mayer said that the Vicksburg community is very close, and he feels for the Family Fare.

“We even partnered with Family Fare about a month ago to do a kind of fundraiser for young kids and young readers,” Mayer said. “And to figure out something like that happened right nearby, is again, just heartbreaking.”

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said. There are no charges as of now, but when the investigation is completed the county prosecutor will decide whether to file charges or not.
