5-year-old critically injured in Comstock Township crash

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 5-year-old is in critically injured after a crash in Comstock Township on Saturday afternoon, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. 

KCSO said around 2:05 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the intersection of South Sprinkle Road and Comstock Avenue/Lake Street for a crash. 

When deputies arrived, they determined a car traveling eastbound on Lake Street disregarded the red light at South Sprinkle Road.

As the car continued through the intersection, KCSO said it was hit by a vehicle that was traveling northbound on South Sprinkle Road and had the right of way. 

The northbound driver received minor injuries, KCSO said. 

Deputies said the at-fault vehicle had three people in it. The driver and adult passenger received minor injuries. However, a 5-year-old child was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. 

KCSO said speed does appear to be a factor in the crash and it's still under investigation.
