GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Multiple fire crews responded to a fire at a Mr. Burger restaurant in Grand Rapids Saturday evening.
The fire was reported around 5:20 p.m. at the location on Northland Drive near Plainfield Avenue NE.
Jeff Drake, the district fire chief for the Plainfield Fire Department said a customer inside the restaurant was a firefighter who used a manual extinguisher to try to put out the flames when they broke out. The fire was too large for the extinguisher, so multiple fire crews were dispatched.
Heavy smoke was coming from the building, and the fire damage was limited to the kitchen. Drake said part of the roof burned and there is additional smoke and water damage.
Drake said typically a fire in the grease hood comes from a lack of maintenance, but fire investigators were still determining the cause.
No one was injured.
Kent County dispatch said fire crews from Plainfield Township, Rockford, Algoma Township, Ada Township, Alpine Township and Cannon Township all responded.
