WALKER, Mich. — Friday night just before 9 p.m. crews responded to a fire at the DeltaPlex Arena in Walker.

According to Walker Fire Department Chief Dave Pelton, crews were called to a fire alarm of smoke in the building. However, it was upgraded to a second alarm once they arrived at the scene.

Multiple crews responded to the call, including the Walker and Plainfield fire departments.

Pelton said the fire was found to be located in a wall on the building's west side and smoke filled the facility.

According to officials, the fire was a "hidden pocket fire" in the wall assembly. Crews had to cut holes in the roof of the facility to get to the fire.

One firefighter was hurt when they slipped on water that began to freeze due to the low temperature outside.

The smoke from the fire caused damage to the building, the full extent of which is unknown. However, an airboat was brought in to help ventilate the smoke from the building.

Life EMS was also on the scene.

The arena closed last summer. Prior to the closure, the center hosted many events and concerts. It's currently still the donation drop-off site where the nonprofit Santa Claus Girls operates.
