MUSKEGON, Mich. — Summertime is around the corner and that means it will soon be time for cruising season on the great lakes.
Cruise the Great Lakes says the vessels will make over 600 port visits, bringing in over 20,000 passengers to experience the great lakes this year.
That’s nearly double the number of passengers from a decade ago.
Regional ports, like the one in Muskegon, are expected to see 140,000 cruise passenger visits this year.
Leaders say they expect the regional economic impact generated by cruising will surpass $200 million dollars, which stretches beyond the great lakes into communities all over the Midwest.
They say this will happen because of port visits, shoreside spending and growing appeal for these cruises.
Ana Tanski, with the Cruise the Great Lakes organization, says people can expect vessels and experiences to grow, because of how popular these cruises are becoming.
Cruises will start at the end of this month and will last until October.
