GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — The beginning stages of the construction on the Acrisure Amphitheater project in Grand Rapids has begun.
Workers began the demolition process on the city's former public works building at 201 Market Avenue SW last week. The contractor for the project set up at the site on May 1 and demolition began a few days later.
The footprint of the new amphitheater encompasses everything west of Market Avenue, between Cherry Street and Ney Avenue SW, according to schematics shared by Grand Action 2.0.
The demolition of the buildings in the amphitheater's footprint is estimated to take around four months. The salt dome, located on the northwest region of the amphitheater's footprint, will remain through the end of the 2024/25 winter, Bill Culhane at Progressive AE said.
Pioneer Construction is taking the lead on the demolition in a joint venture with Barton Marlow.
Once the demolition is complete, excavation and utility installation will begin.
Culhane also said that the property south of amphitheater will continue to be used by the city until they eventually move out.
The 12,000-seat amphitheater is estimated to cost $184 million, with about $157.5 million accounted for from private and public funding.
Groundbreaking is officially set for May 21.
The amphitheater is expected to open in spring of 2026.
