Driver arrested after multiple crashes in Grand Rapids, four people injured

A man is now in police custody after causing the crashes Thursday afternoon.

A man has been taken into police custody after police said he caused multiple crashes in south west Grand Rapids Thursday afternoon.

Police said the crashes happened near the area of Burton Street and Buchanan Avenue SW.  Four people including the driver were taken to the hospital. It is believed that alcohol was a factor in this crash.

The first 911 call for help came in just before 3 p.m. when a multi-car crash occurred on U.S. 131 near Franklin St SW.

While Michigan State Police were going to that crash, one of the drivers left the scene, leaving behind "a trail of 911 calls due to his erratic behavior," police said.  The calls led Grand Rapids Police to the Saint Mary's Hospital Emergency drive where the suspect parked before driving over the curb.

Police said the 30-year-old suspect was the most seriously injured. The other three injured range from serious to minor. The suspect will not be charged until he has been treated at the hospital.
