Leighton Township, Mich. (WZZM) - When police contacted them to say a van had smashed their house and was parked in the living room, a Wayland family says they thought it was a practical joke.
Someone trying to be funny.
But it was no joke.
"A car left the road and decided to come into my living room," observed Carol Tiemeyer, surveying the damage to the house on 146th Avenue where her family has lived for 26 years.
The van smashed right through some ground floor windows all the way into a downstairs living room full of toys where the owner's grandchildren often play.
But when the vehicle came crashing in Monday afternoon, no one was home.
"The whole house shifted," says Tiemeyer. "It's a tri level and so in the upstairs kitchen all the cupboard doors were open, things were knocked out on the floor, even things in the garage fell off the shelves. So yea, the whole house shifted."
Police say the 61 year old woman driving the Ford van was wearing a surgical boot on her right foot. It was so bulky she was unable to brake.
Her vehicle was also badly damaged, but the driver was not hurt.
"We are just glad everyone is okay," says Tiemeyer. "That she is okay and nobody was home at the time. It could have been a lot worse."
