Suspected drunk driver's pickup hit by oncoming train in Ionia County

Authorities said when the driver spotted the train, they got out of the truck. The train wasn't able to stop and struck the unoccupied vehicle.

IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — Law enforcement in Ionia County are investigating after a suspected drunk driver got a pickup truck stuck on railroad tracks and caused a collision with a train Wednesday evening. 

The Ionia County Sheriff's Office said around 10:35 p.m., a train struck a parked 2007 Ford F-150 on the tracks near Jackson Road and West Bippley Road. 

Deputies said the truck got stuck on the tracks about a half mile from the nearest roadway access. 

The driver, who admitted to law enforcement he had been drinking and was intoxicated at the time, got out of the pickup before the train collided with the vehicle. 

The train wasn't able to stop. 

The Michigan State Police handled the train crash while the Ionia County Sheriff's Office took charge of the OWI investigation. 

The sheriff's office said in addition to the MSP, the Campbell Township Fire Department, the Lake Odessa Fire Department and Reed & Hoppes towing responded.
