DETROIT — DTE Gas Company customers will see a slight increase to their bills this fall following an approved rate increase by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).
Customers are estimated to see an increase of about 2.28% on their monthly bill, or $1.98 for residential customers typically using 100 cubic feet of natural gas each month.
In addition, customers will also have a 66 cent "Infrastructure Recovery Mechanism" surcharge on their monthly bills that will increase annually. The 66 cent increase will increase to $6.28 by Jan. 1, 2029.
Both the rate increase and the surcharge are set to take effect Nov. 21, 2024.
The Detroit-based utility company requested an increase of rates by $266 million, but the MPSC only approved an increase of $113,788,000, a 57% reduction from the amount sought.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel intervened in the rate increase case on behalf of Michiganders, arguing that the $266 million requested increase was "excessive and unnecessary."
“The Commission's decision to slash DTE's requested rate hike by more than half will save consumers hundreds of millions of dollars on their utility bills,” said Nessel. “This is money that families can now use for their own needs rather than seeing it spent on corporate jet travel for utility executives. My department remains committed to advocating for Michigan consumers and will continue to fight unnecessary and unceasing rate hikes from the utility corporations in this State.”
DTE Energy said the rate increase will fund infrastructure investments and modernization of its natural gas transmission and distribution systems.
