Family marches for justice after 17-year-old hit by Kent County Sheriff's cruiser dies

The family of 17-year-old Riley Doggett wants the video footage of what happened to him after he was hit by a Kent County Sheriff's cruiser in April.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The family of 17-year-old Riley Doggett, who was hit by a Kent County Sheriff’s deputy's cruiser last month, marched Monday at the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. Doggett died last week after being in the hospital for the past month.

Around 70 people including Doggett's family and friends showed up outside of the Kent County Sheriff's Office calling for answers.

"We haven't gotten an I'm sorry, we haven't gotten a video, we haven't gotten nothing," said Doggett's sister.

Doggett's family is mourning his loss after he was hit in April by a Kent County sheriff's cruiser. Deputies said Doggett was an occupant in what they believed was a stolen vehicle connected to several crimes in Kent County when they tried to stop the car. They said Doggett got out of the car and started to run when he was hit by the cruiser.

Doggett had been in the hospital since he was hit in Wyoming last month and last week, he died.

"It's not fair that our family stayed in the hospital for a month. A month day in and day out praying for a miracle. Literally like praying for a miracle. Every little thing he did we thought that was hope and a month later he passed," said Doggett's sister.

The family said Monday's march was to honor Riley and get justice for his life. The main thing the family wanted to come from their march was the video footage of what happened to Riley.

"It's not fair that we don't have an explanation, like I said before we are not afraid to say it was truly an accident. We will admit that if that's what it is but let us see the video and let us decide," said Doggett's sister.

The video footage they want still has not been released. The family hopes to continue to raise awareness for Riley until they obtain the video of what happened.
