BYRON CENTER, Mich. (WZZM) The passenger in a car accident that killed a Byron Center teenager says a pothole caused the crash.

The 18-year-old passenger says Victoria Garraus had new tires on her Kia Rio and swerved to miss a pothole on Wilson Avenue near 92nd Street Friday night.

The Kent County Sheriff investigator says her car went airborne and hit a tree. Garraus was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger suffered facial cuts and a broken leg.

Deputies say that after looking at the pothole, they determined that it was not a major concern and would not have damaged her vehicle. The Kent County Road Commission has since filled the pothole.

Deputies do say that speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The funeral for Garraus is Friday afternoon in Sarasota, Florida.
