BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Eight Ferris State University fraternity members and their dog safely escaped a fire in their fraternity house Wednesday with no injuries reported.
The eight members of the Theta Theta chapter of the Sigma Pi fraternity are moving into temporary housing provided by the university as the house was "significantly damaged." The school is also providing them with food and other supplies.
Authorities are investigating the fire to find out what caused it. The fraternity's president, Bryce Porter, said that residents noticed the power to the home went out around 8 a.m., they then smelled smoke and noticed a wall felt warm. At that point, they called the fire department.
“We care deeply about the safety of our students,” said Jeanine Ward-Roof, vice president for Student Affairs. “The important thing is that everyone is safe. We are working with the students to give them a place to stay and other things they will need.”
The fraternity was planning to move into a new house next month, and the school said they could have access to the building next week.
