GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A fight broke out inside a Kent County courtroom during a preliminary hearing for a murder case Friday morning, law enforcement said.

It happened during the preliminary hearing for the open murder case in the killing of 18-year-old Paul Anthony Pearson.

Two men, Abdirizak Abdiyow and Abdinajib Abdi, are both charged with open murder and other firearm charges in his death.

It wasn't immediately clear who was involved in the fight, but the Kent County Sheriff's Office said six people were involved. They had minor injuries.

Authorities said they believe the altercation was between the defendants' family and the victim’s family.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office is looking into the dust-up.

The fatal shooting that claimed Pearson's life happened on Aug. 17, 2023, on the city's southwest side.

Grand Rapids Police said Pearson was shot during the early morning hours in the 100 block of Burton Street SW.
